Peritoneal Dialysis: For peritoneal dialysis, which involves using the lining of the abdominal cavity, the peritoneal membrane is used. During peritoneal dialysis, a large amount of blood is fed into the peritoneal membrane. Dialysate is injected into the stomach during peritoneal dialysis and drains into the intestines and organs of the patient. The catheter is inserted into the stomach during a minor surgical procedure and is responsible for removing the dialysate.
The wastes, excess fluid, and excess chemicals pass from blood vessels in the peritoneum into the dialysate fluid during this process. The catheter drains the dialysate fluid from the abdomen, which is then replaced with new fluid. During the day, the cycler machine can be used as part of routine peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) procedures or overnight while the patient sleeps.
